Everything You Need to Know Before Applying for Credit Cards

  • Credit Score: Your credit score plays a significant role in the approval of your credit card application. A high score can also fetch you better interest rates.
  • Types of Credit Cards: Understand the different types of credit cards available - reward cards, travel cards, etc. Choose one that suits your spending habits and lifestyle.
  • Fees and Charges: Be aware of the various fees and charges associated with the card. These include annual fees, late payment fees, and foreign transaction fees. Some cards may offer waivers on these fees under certain conditions.
  • Interest Rates: Understand the interest rates. If you don't pay your balance in full each month, you'll be charged interest. The lower the interest rate, the less you'll have to pay.
  • Credit Limit: Consider the credit limit, which is the maximum amount you can charge to your card. Exceeding this limit can result in fees and negatively impact your credit score.
  • Responsibility: Remember, a credit card is a responsibility. Use it wisely to avoid falling into debt. Always read the terms and conditions before applying.

Do's

Don'ts

Pay on Time: Always pay your credit card bills on time to avoid late payment fees and maintain a good credit score.

Don't Overspend: Avoid spending beyond your repayment capacity. This can lead to debt and negatively impact your credit score.

Review Statements: Regularly review your credit card statements to detect any unauthorized transactions or errors.

Don't Share Details: Never share your credit card details, PIN, or OTP with anyone. This can lead to fraud.

Understand Terms: Read and understand the terms and conditions of your credit card.

Don't Pay Just Minimum Due: Paying only the minimum due leads to high interest charges.

  • Confidentiality: Never share your card details, PIN, or OTP with anyone.
  • Monitor Statements: Regularly check your credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions.
  • Alerts: Opt for SMS or email alerts to stay updated about your card usage.
  • Secure Networks: Use secure networks for online transactions and avoid using public Wi-Fi.
  • Two-Factor Authentication: Enable this feature for added security during transactions.
  • Report Loss or Theft: In case of card loss or theft, immediately report to your bank and block the card. Your prompt action can prevent potential misuse.

You’ve got questions We’ve got answers

A credit card is a payment card issued that allows the cardholder to borrow funds to make purchases or pay for services. The borrowed amount is to be repaid to the credit card issuer within a specified time, typically with interest charged on the outstanding balance.

A credit card works by allowing cardholders to make purchases or pay for services with borrowed funds from the card issuer. When a cardholder uses a credit card for a transaction, the card issuer pays the merchant on behalf of the cardholder. The cardholder is then required to repay the borrowed amount to the credit card issuer within a specific time, usually on a monthly billing cycle.

To apply for a credit card, follow these steps:

  • Compare credit card options based on interest rates, fees, rewards, and benefits
  • Review the eligibility criteria, such as age, income, employment, and credit history, specified by the credit card issuer.
  • Collect required documents like ID proof, address proof, income proof, and others mentioned by the issuer.

The eligibility criteria for a credit card may vary depending on the credit card type. However, some common factors considered for credit card eligibility include:

  • Age: Typically, the minimum age requirement is 18 years or above
  • Income: Most issuers require a minimum income level to ensure the cardholder's ability to repay the borrowed funds
  • Employment status: Regular employment, self-employment, or a steady source of income may be required.
  • Credit history: A good credit history demonstrates responsible credit behaviour, increasing the chances of approval.
  • Residency: Some issuers may require applicants to be residents or citizens of the country where they are applying for the credit card

When applying for a credit card with YES BANK, you will typically need to provide the following documents:

  • Identity proof: Any government-issued ID card such as Aadhaar, PAN card, or passport
  • Address proof: Documents like Aadhaar, utility bills (electricity, water, gas), passport, or driving license that establish your residential address
  • Income proof: Depending on your employment type, you may need to submit salary slips, bank statements, IT returns, or Form 16 as proof of income
  • Passport-size photographs: Recent passport-size photographs for identification purposes
  • Application form: The completed and signed credit card application form provided by YES Bank
